Hindustan Prefab
Limited (HPL) was incorporated in 1953.
It was earlier founded as Hindustan Housing
Factory Ltd., which was set up at the behest of
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister
of India for solving the housing problem created
due to influx of refugees from West Pakistan. As
years rolled by, the company came to be known as
HPL, the change in name being necessitated by
diversification of its operations. HPL thus became
a fully integrated company with modern
prefabrication facilities and a railway siding of
its own in the heart of Delhi to undertake faster
and challenging jobs in the country.
In the
last 50 years of its existence, HPL has built a
wide spectrum of civil engineering structures and
has also supplied components for the building
industry and the national railways. It pioneered
the production of prestressed concrete railway
sleepers which replaced wooden sleepers in Indian
Railways. It also became the first company to
produce precast pre-stressed concrete railway
bridge girders for making railway bridges in the
country. The company has built a large number of
residential, factory and institutional structures,
using precast concrete and prefabrication
techniques.
Cities like Delhi are dotted
with HPL structures and one of the landmarks in
Delhi, the flagship hotel of the Oberoi Group was
built on a precast concrete frame manufactured by
HPL in its factory. Most of the other structures
including over-bridges, factories, offices and
houses were built by the company in record times
and replaced the out-classed traditional
cast-in-situ buildings.
HPL has a modern
factory in Jangpura, on its 28 acres factory
premises, virtually in the heart of New Delhi. The
factory has five specific departments as mentioned
below:
1. C-I Deptt. for
manufacturing railway sleepers and electric
poles. 2. C-II Deptt. for
manufacturing railway sleepers and pre-stressed
bridge girders. 3. Vayutan
Deptt. for manufacturing autoclaved aerated
cellular concrete. 4. RCC
Deptt. for manufacturing reinforced concrete
products like fencing posts, water tanks, pavement
slabs, kerb stones, Interlocking Solid blocks
for pavements and for retaining walls,
etc. 5. Wood work Deptt. for
manufacturing door and window shutters from wood
as well as from new materials like MDF (medium
density fibreboard).
The above Departments
are supported by steam generating boilers,
batching plants, grinding mills, sophisticated
handling equipments and above all a dedicated work
force.
The company also has a very well
equiped material testing laboratory in its
premises. The laboratory has equipments for
testing all the ingredients for manufacturing of
concrete as well as the machines required for the
testing of large and heavy concrete products, such
as railway sleepers, electric poles and bridge
girders. The laboratory enjoys a good reputation,
and even out side agencies avail of its services,
before they accept any raw materials from their
suppliers.
The factory is pollution free
and is one of the ecological oasis of Delhi with
trees, water ponds, gardens and greenery. There
is a private railway siding inside the factory and
the heaviest of products can be loaded into
railway wagons for shipment to sites. HPL has a
dedicated team of 500 employees which has 80
Engineers and other technocrats. The team work
brings results & HPL has achieved many firsts
in civil engineering construction techniques,
earning awards from home &
abroad.
